Setting Up Interactive Science Notebooks for Elementary Students

Are you looking for a quick video to help students organize a science notebook? Last year, I created a video to help 5th grade students set up their interactive science notebooks. Science notebooks are great for elementary students because it keeps all of their work in one place. I have used these same steps for middle school science students. The video covers:

  • Get a spiral notebook. One with a plastic cover is best.
  • Write your name, subject, and teacher in Sharpie on the front cover.
  • Create a title page introducing 5th grade science NGSS standard
  • Number the first page #1. Number the back of page 1 as #2. We use the front and back of each page. All of the even numbers will be on the left when your notebook is opened flat. The even numbers will be on the back side of the page also. Begin by numbering to page 20. (Going too fast often leads to misnumbering.)
  • Use colored pencils or markers that don't bleed through the page. Most markers will bleed through.
  • Feel free to show the video to your students. Video link HERE
